Suharto To Be Well Guarded In Bonn

(N.Z.P .A.-Reuter —Copyright) BONN, September 4. Strict security measures will be in force when President Suharto of Indonesia arrives in Bonn for a three-day State visit to West Germany today.

West German police are taking no chances after the stormy events which preceded the President’s visit to The Hague and cut his stay in the Netherlands to one day.

Ypenburg Air Base in The Hague resembled an armed camp as Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard greeted the President and his wife when they stepped out of their DCB airliner bringing them from Djakarta. Tanks stood on guard, helicopters circled overhead and steel-helmeted servicemen with dogs and armed with sten guns swarmed all over the base. Some 100 Indonesians liv-

ing in the Netherlands enthusiastically greeted the Presidential party at the air base, waving Dutch and Indonesian flags and shouting, “Merdeka.” In the reception hall the chairman of the Dutch Upper and Lower House, the Prime Minister, Dr Piet de Jong, and

his Cabinet and other civil and military authorities were introduced to the President About 3800 Indonesians live in West Germany and officials believe that many of them oppose the Indonesian Government In addition some German students, supported by several leading academics have called for demonstrations against President Suharto and announced meetings in support of what they call “the oppressed people of Indonesia.” After being welcomed by President Gustav Heinemann he will be flown to the capital by helicopter to avoid any possible danger from a motorcade drive.

President Suharto will start talks almost immediately with President Heinemann at the Presidential villa on the Rhine.

He and Mrs Suharto will be guests of honour at a lunch given by Dr Heinemann and in the afternoon he will meet Chancellor Willy Brandt. On Saturday, President Suharto will meet representatives of West German industry and economic organisations before flying on to Bremen and Hamburg, where he will conclude his State visit on Sunday. West German officials stress that General Suharto’s visit will be primarily a ceremonial event with political and economic matters playing only a minor role.

The Indonesian Foreign Minister (Mr Adam Malik) who will be in Bonn only today before leaving for the conference of non-aligned States in Lusaka, is scheduled to hold talks with his West German counterpart, Mr Walter Scheel.
