ASSAULT ON DRIVERS

Taxi Owners Concerned (N.Z. Press Association; AUCKLAND, Sept 4. The Taxi Proprietors’ Federation is growing increasingly concerned about the number of assaults on taxi drivers. A flashing roof light, a siren, a continually blowing horn and flashing headlights were suggested for use when the taxi driver was in distress Or sensed potential danger. These would all be connected by concealed switches in the car. Present legislation prohibits the use of such devices.

A remit seeking an end to this prohibition was presented by Mr H. C. Lough, of Auckland, who was the victim of an assault in 1945.

Mr Lough said the federation would also approach the Justice Department asking for the introduction of legislation which would act as a deterrent to would-be assailants.
