Three Butchers Win $24,000

Three Christchurch butchers had a happy but hectif day yesterday after learning that their threeman syndicate, “8.8. C.. had won the first prize of $24,000 in the Golden Kiwi lottery No. 439. The men, who work in the same butchery, put the initials of their surnames together to form the title'of the syndicate. “8.8. C. but prefer to remain anonymous. Harried most of their busy Friday by well-wishing customers, one of the botchers said: “Our faces are quite stiff from smiling all day in response to congratulations from our customers."

Another said: “It was a great thrill to win it, but we’ve been getting a fair hammering.” One of the men, married with four children, came to Christchurch from Greymouth about 10 years ago. The second is an immigrant who has been in New Zealand for about 15 years, and is married with one child. The third is a Christchurch man in his twenties, who is single. The winning ticket was bought at a Memorial Avenue tobacconist’s. Two other Christchurch tickets, “Typist’s Luck,” and “M. Partnership,” won second and fourth prizes in the lottery.
