Parliament’s Diary

Two petitions asking for higher expenditure on education were presented when Parliament resumed yesterday afternoon. The Pharmacy Bill was presented, given a pro forma second reading, and referred to the Social Services Committee. The annual report of the Maori Purposes Fund was tabled. Ministers answered 10 questions.

Three bills were reported back from committees and are ready to proceed: the Medical Practitioners’ Bill, the Dunedin City (Forestry) Bill and the Bruce County (Community Centre) Bill.

A petition on rising prices was brought back with a recommendation for “consideration.” The petition of the Rev. L W. Fraser and 653 others asking for a Royal commission on road deaths received “most favourable” consideration.

A division on urgency was carried, 41-38, by the Government. The House then continued the second reading debate on the Payroll Tax Bill, adjourning for an hour at 4.30 p.m. for the Usual annual meetings of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
