MAILS SLOWER
Surface mail services between New Zealand and other countries have apparently not improved with age. An 1887 company diary gave mail times from Lyt telton to London of 42 days, with 13 sailings a year, the council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce was told last evening. In contrast, letters now often took more than six weeks, and parcels two or three months, the chairman of the postal com-
mittee (Mr R. H. T. Hamilton) reported. One parcel posted in Canada on April 29 was not received in New Zealand i until August 8. In his early office days, Mr Hamilton said, there was a rush to catch the fortnightly mail to Britain. “No air mail then, of course. And this mail across the Pacific, the United States, Canada and the Atlantic took exactly 30 days from Auckland.”
