PROTEST MEETING New Zealand Federation of Labour Canterbury District Trades Council In conjunction with the following organisations Public Service Association, Post Office Association, Church of England, Roman Catholic Church, Methodist Church, Presbyterian Church, Salvation Army, Old People’s Welfare Council, Solo Parents, Christchurch L.R.C. The Canterbury District Trades Council of the New Zealand Federation of Labour calls for the maximum support from the citizens of Christchurch at a meeting at the Civic Theatre on Thursday, September 3rd, 1970, at 12.15 p.m. under the chairmanship of Sir George Manning. The reason for this meeting is to draw to the attention of the Government the total inadequacy of the present pensions and also to decide what action should be taken. While the pensions paid to beneficiaries were inadequate in January, 1970, as a result of wage movements between January and October of this year and the resultant increase in prices the position in beneficiaries is now desperate. TRADESMEN’S WAGES PENSIONS Tradesmen’s award wages January 1970 ~. $13.25 per week January 1970 ... ... $1.03 per hour e eD * em k er 1970 $l3 75 ner week October 1970 $1.34 per hour be P temDer iy/u * - per weeK The point we make is that the 30 cents rise for Tradesmen is 30c per hour on a base of $40.00 per week, giving them a rise on their basic pay of $12.40 per week. The pension rise of 50c is on the base of $13.25 per week. The 50c rise for all beneficiaries puts them further behind grossly inadequate benefits. It is apparent that it is Government Policy to “destroy” the New Zealand Social Security system. All other organisations and individuals who support this protest are invited to attend. Their plight is desperate, show your concern. R. A. HILL, PRESIDENT. G. G. WALKER, SECRETARY.
