Organisations interested tn shipping services from Lyttelton to the Pacific would be invited to a meeting to discuss the unsatisfactory service, the council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce decided last evening.
The secretary (Mr P. L. Bush) presented a shipping survey which said a questionnaire had been sent to members, on Lyttelton to Pacific shipping difficulties. Of 27 companies, 27 wanted stowage for general goods, three required a small amount of refrigerated space, and the rest did not require shipping.
The questionnaire showed a demand for a regular service, the survey said. Several firms said they were losing or declining export business because of lack of shipping. “Tonnages exported at present are small, but this is attributed directly to the unavailability of regular and suitable shipping,” the survey; said.
