Mildest Winter On Record
Last month was the second warmest August on record and brought to a close the mildest winter in Christchurch since records were first established in 1864, according to a summary of the month’s weather prepared by the Meteorological Office at Christchurch Airport.
There were record high seasonal temperatures on August 28 (72.7 deg and on August 30 (73.8 deg In the Botanic Gardens there was a
maximum of 74deg on August 30.
Sunshine during the month (141 hours) whs close to average (146 hours). August, like June and July, was remarkably fog free. ■■ On August 23 and 24 there was a cold southerly outbreak—t)ie coldest of the entire Winter—although temperatures otherwise ■ were remarkably high, both day and night. There was a persistence of winds from the northerly quarter. Rainfall, which came mainly during the cold southerly was, at 6.5 in, below average for August' (7.12 in by more than jin.
