Fewer Taxis Licensed
fN Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Sept 1. A decrease in the number of taxis licensed in the last two years could be assumed to be due to increases in the number of private cars, the New Zealand Taxi Proprietors’ Federation president (Mr G. L. V. Hunter, of Auck land), said in his report to the annual conference today Up to December, 1969, licensing authorities had considered 779 applications for taxi service licences, compared with 698 in 1969, 1896 in 1967 and 1941 in 1966.
At the same time there had been decreases in the number of passenger service vehicles and buses. There were substantial increases in rental vehicle fleets, however.
Mr Hunter said the report of the Committee of Inquiry into urban passenger transport merely aimed to bolster the present inefficiency of public passenger transport, and did nothing to solve the major issue of how to persuade the public to use its own services.
