STUDY GRANTS
Women who have not been ablo to complete or carry on their university work will be assisted by a small grant from the New Zealand Federation of University Women. The $6O annual grant will be awarded to a member of the federation who ia not eligible for any other grants or assistance so that she may complete or carry out a piece of research within New Zealand, or further her studies. Mrs E. M. Christie, of the Nelson branch, which proposed the remit requesting the setting up of a fund for the grant said this was an attempt to provide assistance to members whose family responsibilities or other circumstances had prevented them furthering their university work. It was felt that a small grant of money might be all that was needed to provide the stimulus or the financial means to carry out such projects as research, writing of
papers, and preparation of theses for publication.
The federation could provide a valuable service by pro. vlding tn award open to the rank and file member in New Zealand, she said. The bequest of $4OOO from the estate of the late Mrs Teresa Dorothy Thomas, of Auckland, to be used for university re-training grants, was announced at the triennial conference of the New Zealand Federation of University Women in Christchurch yesterday. Mrs Thomas was a member of the Auckland branch for many years. The bequest was initiated by her family-
It will form a fund from which the Auckland branch wlli grant the Teresa Thomas Award for re-training of older women graduates, or when necessary, undergraduates wishing to resume their careers or needing refresher training. Applicants will be chosen from throughout New Zealand.
