Ashburton Competitions Festival Continues

A big programme of classes was completed in the various sections on the third day of the Ashburton Competitions Society’s annual festival yesterday, and there were many excellent performances.

The judge of the tap J dancing classes (Mrs M. ' Hamilton, of Christchurch) 1 said it had been very pleas- . ing to see the large, entries in this section. There had been varying standards in classes which made made it difficult to select the minor placings. “My main concern was the poor time-keeping of the competitors. It appeared that the performers had not had enough rehearsal with pianists, and where tape recordings were used there was usually a failure in volume. The choice of song and the suitability of the key to the performers voice should be taken into consideration in the song and dance section.’* The judge of the national dancing, Mrs B. Rout, of Dunedin, said there had been some very good work in the under-10 class, with technique and execution very pleasing and competition close. In the senior classes there was a need for more rhythmical dancing in Irish work. Miss Pam Lowe, of Christchurch, who judged the ballet dancing, said she was disappointed in the number of entries but considered these had been affected by the new Royal Academy of Dancing grade syllabus, which is being examined in a few weeks. A widely varied list of classes in the speech section was completed during the day, and a number of performers earned outstanding commendation from the judge (Mrs R. Davis). She said Eilish Moran, of Christchurch, in the nursery rhyme in costume class, for competitors five and under seven years, had appeared in an outstanding costume for her part, and she had appeared very natural and real in her roie.

Mrs Davis said Gregory Tucker, winner of the impromptu conversation class for competitors 13 years and under 15 had proved an easy, relaxed, and intelligent conversationalist. All three competitors in this class had impressed with their conversational ability. Another performance of considerable merit was that of Kathleen Sullivan, of Temuka, in the character recital, nonhamorous, for competitors 11 and under 13 years.
