Uranium Stocks Race Ahead In Australia

Uranium shares dominated Australian markets yesterday after the rich new strike by Queensland mines. Other areas of the mining market tended to firm though there was little interest in the industrial and oil sectors.

Melbourne traders followed London’s lead and opened Queensland Mines at $2B compared with yesterday’s closing price of $11.50. The shares touched $29 early before some profit taking took the price down to a low of $23. On the close Queensland Mines booked sales at $26 for a massive $14.50 rise on the day. Kathleen Investments raced to 1000 c on the opening. The shares finished the day on 926 c, a gain of 456 c. Most other uranium stocks advanced in sympathy. Peko, which also has uranium deposits in the Northern Territory, moved ahead all day and last sold at 1375 c, a rise of 125 c. E.Z.1., which shares Peko’s prospects, added 39c to 495 c.

Western Mining was pushed through the 1200 c level to 1215 c for a rise of 20c. Mount Isa added 15c, C.R.A. 10c, New Broken Hill 30c, and Utah sc. Oils were static though Bounty rose 2c to lie after the announcement of the Harbqurside - Brins - Palgrave offer.
