Hippo Dies
(N.Z. Press Association)
AUCKLAND, September 1. Kiboko, a 1) ton hippopotamus at the Auckland Zoo, has died after swallowing a small rubber ball.
The 100 director (Mr D. Wood) said he did not believe the animal had been killed deliberately. The 4in ball had probably floated down the creek into the hippopotamus enclosure.
‘“We get quite a' bit of stufl coming down the creek. Worst are the plastic bottles and bags, which are all potentially dangerous, and something of a problem of the age,” said Mr Wood. In addition, the too creek was becoming increasingly polluted by rubbish, dyes and detergents. Only a few days ago large quantities of detergent were released into the stream, causing 20ft high foam to build up near the hippopotamus enclosure. The Auckland City Council parks committee today called on the director of works and city engineer (Mr B. D. Duffield) to investigate pollution of the creek.
