Potatoes Refused
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) CANBERRA, Sept. 2. The Australian Customs Minister (Mr Donald Chipp) has refused to allow New Zealand to export 500 tons of potatoes to Australia. Replying to a question in the House of Representatives, Mr Chipp said an interdepartmental committee had considered the matter last Friday. There was an agreement between Australia and New Zealand that Australia would take only surplus New Zealand potatoes for “crisping” purposes when potatoes were in short supply in Australia. The committee had found that there was no short supply at present, and had recommended that Mr Chipp refuse the application, the Minister said.
