Taranaki Is Unchanged
(N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH. Taranaki’s selectors have put their confidence in the 19-year-old T. Heppell as full-back for the Ranfurly Shield challenge against Canterbury at Lancaster Park on Saturday. The team to make the challenge is unchanged from that which lost, 12-14, to Hawke’s Bay at New Plymouth last week-end. It is captained by the former All Black flanker, M. C. Wilis, who will play his
101st match for his province. Included also are the North Island lock, I. M. Eliason, the North Island reserve flanker, A. IScown, and the former All Black, W. D. R. Currey, at centre. Heppell, who kicked 123 points for his club side, Clifton, this season, was brought into the Taranaki team as full-back three matches ago, mainly on account of his goal-kicking. However, while Heppell was reasonably successful
with bis kicking (he goaied from seven of 15 attempts in his last three matches), his play as a full-back was not wholly • convincing. There had been some speculation that the veteran K. P. Hurley would return to the position. Instead, the selectors (Messrs 1). J. Carlson, R. Potter and R. Walker) have decided to leave Heppell at full-back and Hurley, who has played 111 matches for Taranaki, on the wing. The shield challenge is the first game on a fourmatch South Island tour.
Hurley will play only against Canterbury and then, because of business commitments, will return home. The team is: Heppell; Hurley, Currey, D. H. McGee; G. O’Neill, J. E. Irving; D. J. Wards; R. Feather; Wills, Eliason, M. W. Bridger, Scown; A. J. Gardiner, F. W. Harris, J. McEldowney. The other members of the touring party are:— Backs: D. A. Vesty, B. Davis, N. J. Cameron; forwards: B. Collins, J. Thwaltes, K. J. Crossman.
