Overseas Funds Involved
The recent hold-up in New Zealand of more than 30 pacers and trotters sold to the United States because Qantas has been refused landing rights in New York is a serious set-back to New Zealand’s overseas earnings. This is the opinion of Mr B. Meale, director of the Central Standardbred Agency, Wellington, who said yesterday that three aircraft had been cancelled in the last three weeks and that another 30 horses in Australia were also awaiting transport to the United States.
Mr Meale said that thousands of dollars were involved in the sale of the horses and that payment was held up until a guaran-
tee of delivery could be given. Among the New Zealand horses for which shipment has been delayed is last season’s top three-year-old in New Zealand and Australia, Bonny Frost, sold recently for a reported $70,000; the New Zealand Cup class performer, Chief Command; and the brilliant four-year old Rossini. Mr Meale said that the situation regarding transport overseas was so serious that the Government had been approached about the hold-up. It is understood that similar action will be taken by Australian bloodstock agents
