RACING King Minos Fancy At Rotorua

“The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND. In a bid to gain his third steeplechase win, King Minos, a thoroughly proficient jumper from Te Puke, will coijimand much of the interest in the Bertram Memorial Steeplechase, the richest event at Rotorua today.

King Minos's last race, at Tauranga on August 8, brought a first in the Eastern Steeplechase under 10-5, the same weight as he will carry today. His previous win and only other race over country also was at Tauranga, in the Bay of Plenty Steeplechase on June 20.

All of King Minos’s seven rivals have had more experience in steeplechasing, but none was anywhere near as well performed as a hurdler, nor do many of them look open to much more improvement. As a hurdler. King Minos was at times very good, two of his accomplishments being a first in the 1969 Grand National Hurdles and a third m the last Great Northern Hurdles.

Yet he always gave the impression that however well he did over hurdles, it would be as a ’chaser that he would really shine. This opinion is at least on the way to being confirmed. For some reasons, steeplechases at Rotorua are nearly always nin at a great rate, seldom, though, do those responsible for the excitement manage to stay in front until the end. King Minos is a back-runner, but it is pretty certain he will be making his presence felt starting the last half-mile.

Lenoman, Victory Prince and Olde Chelsea look the next best prospects. Macquarrie runs with such freedom that he must always be respected, while Agra, from Hastings, has been showing good form lately in the central districts.

In his last race. Lenoman finished a gallant fourth in the Pakuranga Hunt Cup, a testing three-miler. That was his third appearance in eight days.

Victory Prince was the best after Spray Doone and Game Call in the Grand National Steeplechase on August 1, and he was third as well in the Lincoln Steeplechase behind Robert Earl and Mosque. He won his first race at Rotorua and has nearly always gone well on the course meantime.

With lOst lib. Victory Prince will be carrying 41b more than Lenoman and 51b less than Olde Chelsea, the top-weight, which came second in the event last year and third the time before. The going promises to be good and the weather fine. Selections: Noon. Managh Hurdles: Simon, Aleader, Just Honey. 12.40 p.m.—lnnovation Handicap—First Division: Miss Venture, Colonel Lad. race. “It wasn’t like that years ago,” he said. “Owners knew their horses as friends, and it wasn’t just the stake that counted.” Some of that spirit remains, however, and Mr Bell is I cheered by it because, otherwise, Riccarton, once the Mecca for racegoers, would have lost even more ground than it has to the North Island. Stakes have been increased in the North Island beyond what the Canterbury club can hope to match, but there is still the “glamour” of the New Zealand Cup, the Derby, the Oaks, the Grand National Steeplechase, and the Grand National Hurdles.

There were some owners who would prefer to win such | a race at Riccarton, although they could earn more stake money in the North Island, Mr Bell said. Riccarton and the C.J.C. had been accused of “stuffiness,” Mr Bell said, and there might have been a few years when there was some justification for the charge. However, the
