Race Relations In New Zealand
Branches of the New Zealand Federation of University Women will be urged to take appropriate action to further harmonious relations among racial groups in New Zealand and, in particular, to promote equal educational opportunity, in fact as well as in theory, for the Maori people. A recommendation to this effect from the Otago branch was passed at the federation’s national conference yesterday. In its recommendation, the
Otago branch suggested that action could include continuation of the scheme for assisting Maori children with home, work; assistance in setting up more play centres; support for greater emphasis on Maori studies (including the Maori language) in teachers’ colleges as well as in primary and secondary schools; and the publication of bi-linguai story books. Several delegates felt that these educational opportunities should be extended to adults as well as to children.
