Request For Footpath

Sir,—The new road now being formed connecting Mt Pleasant and Major Hornbrook Roads will be of convenience to motorists. For many years there has been a well-formed track for pedestrians, who do not have the use of such on the length of Mt Pleasant Road, which lacks a footpath. The unavoidable practice of numerous adults and school children of all ages is to walk on the road. The safety of these pedestrians should have been given priority by the Christchurch City Council. Would the council please indicate when this long overdue provision of a footpath to the Belleview Terrace corner can be expected?—Yours, etc., PARENT. August 22, 1970. [The city engineer (Mr P. G. Scoular) replies: “Approximately $20,000 was spent on Mount Pleasant Road last financial year, basically to provide a footpath and upgrade the road, and a further $15,000 has been allowed for. in this year’s estimates to continue thq work. It is hoped that a further amount can be allowed for in the following year to complete the work.”]
