Road Tunnel Pond Not Approved
Because other ways to remedy the situation had proved unsuccessful, the Christchurch Drainage Board last evening decided to tell the ChristchurchLyttelton Road Tunnel Authority that it must remove the inlet structure for its ornamental pond and reinstate the original culvert conditions.
However, the board, on the recommendation of its works committee, said it would be prepare' to discuss the matter with the authority’s representatives.
The ornamental pool, on the east side of the tunnel authority’s toll plaza and administration building, has not been filled because of suggestions that water being let out of it could cause flooding and erosion. Scum Lines.— The cleaning of scum tines at the Bromley sewage treatment works was a particularly dirty job, the board was informed In a committee report Plant workers and assistants had asked for the payment of! dirt money in
discussions on the renewal of their agreement with the board. The board was told that modifications costing $3OO would overcome the problem. Municipal Composting.— The New Zealand Compost Society study committee had completed its investigations into municipal composting, and the board would receive copies of a report, the treatment works committee reported. The society’s committee had met 15 times and thanked the board for the use of the board room and other facilities
Rate Levies.—A motion by Mr J. F. Davidson that the board, in view of the everincreasing rate levy, approach the Government, individually or with other local bodies, for a Royal Commission to investigate all aspects of rating to determine a more equitable method of rating, was lost by nine votes to four. An amendment by Mr G. A. G. Connal that the board make representations to a committee of inquiry, recognised by the Government, on questions of rating, was carped.
