JOHNSON CUP

Sec. Schools’ Hockey Sixteen teams from as far afield as Auckland and Dunedin will take part in a secondary schools’ hockey tournament for the Johnson Cup, beginning in Christchurch today. Six teams from various areas of the North Island and several Christchurch teams are among those taking part. The matches will be played at the Ensors Road ground, the tournament concluding with the final on Thursday afternoon. Linwood High School appears to have a good chance: of winning the tournament, but the strength of many schools is unknown. Linwood is drawn in section I with Marlborough Boys’ College, St Paul’s Collegiate School (Hamilton), and Waitaki Boys’ High School. There are 150 visitors for the tournament, all of whom will be billeted in Christchurch. The grounds have been in good condition for the matches, but the rain at the week-end may have caused ■ some deterioration.
