AMERICA’S CUP

French Still Confident (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) NEWPORT (Rhode Island). The French are still confident they can beat the Australian yacht Gretel II in their America’s Cup semi-final, even though they lost the first race.

After P. Delfour had been recalled to skipper France in today’s second heat, the Australian skipper, J. Hardy said: “Those big smiles on the Frenchmen are a formidable sign.” Hardy described the French sail-handling in the first race as “great.” The veteran French skip-' per L. Noverraz, aged 68, was sensationally “sacked” on Saturday by Baron M. Bich, head of the French syndicate challenging for the America’s Cup, after his error at the final mark let the Australians through for an easy win in the first race of the elimination series. The French had led most of the way. Delfour resigned from the French crew early this month after a bitter argument on tactics with Baron Bich—who is understood to have sent an urgent “all is forgiven” message to Delfour, who remained in Newport after his resignation and watched Saturday’s race from one of the press boats.

As well as Noverraz, the French have replaced all. but two of their crew for today’s second race.
