N.Z. Player Wins Chess

(N.Z Press Assn — Copyright! COVENTRY. A 49-year-old New Zealander, R. Wade, has won the British chess championship. With eights points out of a possible 11, he finished one point ahead of six competitors, including M. Fuller, a 25-year-old Australian. It was the second time that Wade, who came to Britain from Otago 22 years ago, had won the British title. The last time, in 1952, he was the youngest holder for 20 years. This time, he was the oldest since 1957. “The results of Fuller and myself show that chess in Australasia is now able to compete on level terms with the Home country,” said Wade.
