Delay To Vessel

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 23. Shifting cargo in the Union Steam Ship Company’s rollon container ferry Wanaka caused the ship to be delayed in Wellington for more than 24 hours.

The ship struck heavy seas off the Bay of Plenty on Friday morning, about 40 containers breaking loose from their lashings. Little structural damage was done to the ship, but the containers, weighing from five to 15 tons each, had to be unloaded in Wellington and restowed. The slight damage was repaired on Saturday. Watersiders worked on Saturday and yesterday restowing the containers. A spokesman for the Union Company said yesterday that damage to the cargo would not be known until the containers were opened. The Wanaka was expected to sail about midday on Monday, he said.
