BATTLE OF THE BACK MARKERS.—The three back markers in the Governor’s Bay-Lyttelton road running race, recently, had a good tussle before finally sorting out their positions. R. Sharpe (New Brighton), left, an early leader of the trio, is shown being challenged by M. Clarkson (Methodist), the Canterbury 800-1500 metres champion. In the background is the other back marker, D. F. Dixey (Methodist). They were all beaten for fastest time, however, by the national junior harrier champion, P. Watson (Methodist), who had turned senior only a few days earlier. Dixey later swooped through on a long down hill run to gain second fastest time.
