Interest In Bompa

(N.Z. Press Association) MELBOURNE. Interest will centre today on the first Australian appearance of Bompa, one of the New Zealand contingent for the Caul* field Cup and Melbourne Cup. Bompa will run in the weight-for-age J. J. Liston Stakes, seven furlongs, at the Victoria Amateur Turf Club’s meeting at Sandown Park. The six-year-old gelding, trained by S. A. Brown, has not raced since winning over seven furlongs at Auckland on June 6. He has ben working well, and on Thursday strode seven furlongs on the steeplechase grass at Flemington, coming home the last three furlongs in 37|sec. The good weight-for-age performer Crewman, a disappointment in his first-up appearance at Moonee Valley last week, is equal favourite with the Sydney galloper, Cryon, which was an impressive fifth a fortnight ago at his first start from a spell. The New Zealand horses Honda and Jet Commander will both run in the Grange Handicap, one mile, in which they will oppose the former New Zealand horse, Rajah Sahib, which has top weight of 9-0. Rajah Sahib was third behind Kumiss at Moonee Valley last Saturday when Kumiss scored his eighth successive win. Honda, which has won on a slow track in New Zealand, should find the going to his liking today. Course officials say it will be slow if there is no overnight rain. Jet Commander has shown up in two country, races since arriving in Australia. He was second at Werribee on August 1 at his last start.
