New Cricket Bat

Thanks to former Englandcricketer, Reg Simpson, you can now buy an improved cricket bat, which incorporates carbon fibre.

Originally this remarkable material was developed for the aerospace industry, but it has so many advantages that new uses are being suggested for it. Weight for weight, it is stronger than steel. As reported in the 8.8. C. World Service programme New Ideas, this was the property that gave Simpson his brainwave. He saw its possibilities in his own field, by using it in bat handles.

The traditional bat had rubber springing in the handle, and recently makers have also been using steel. Using carbon fibre the handle can be just as strong and resilient, but two ounces lighter, about 60 grams. In itself, a lighter bat is no great advantage. But the weight saved in the handle can be put into the blade. This gives a better balance, and greater driving power. The new bat costs about £5.
