GERMAN TV
Loyalty To Miss Rigg The sight of Willy Brandt shaking hands with Kosygin and Brezhnev in Moscow has not been alone in evoking a wide range of emotions among West German televiewers. Of scarcely lesser impact was the departure of Diana Rigg from the series known in the Federal Republic as “With Brolly, Charm and Bowler,” otherwise “The Avengers,” and her replacement by Linda Thorson. Emma Peel’s farewell in that week’s instalment, coupled with Tara King’s debut, brought howls of indignation from viewers in whose hearts Miss Rigg had established a secure niche. The television company's telephones hummed with anger for some time at the end of the first instalment of the new series. A spokesman admitted that the conclusion could be drawn that viewers had “not yet fully accepted” Miss Rigg’s successor. In Diana Rigg’s day the serial claimed the loyalty of more than 60 per cent of all West German televiewers.
