Christmas Stamp Designs

The tower of the Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady of Victories, Sockburn, is featured as one of the designs on the three New Zealand Christmas stamps this year.

It will be on the 10c stamp, one of two new denominations being produced this year to meet public demand for stamps for Christmas cards and aerogrammes being sent overseas.

The other new denomination, a 3c stamp, shows a stained glass window of the First Presbyterian Church, Invercargill.

The “old masters” series will be continued on the 2jc stamp which shows the painting by Correggio, “Adoration of the Child,” the original of which hangs in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy. The issue will go on sale on October 1, and a special, 22c first-day cover is avail-

able. Orders for the covers will be taken at all post offices from September 3 to September 30. Again this year the post office is issuing Christmas stamps on behalf of the Niue and Tokelau Islands. Persons wishing to have covers postmarked at Niue and in the Tokelau Islands should forward their addressed covers and remittance (Niue 5c and Tokelau Islands 6c a cover) to reach the Post Office Philatelic Bureau, Private Bag, Wellington, by September 18. Both designs feature the same painting as the New Zealand 2}c stamp.

Unless stocks are exhausted earlier, the New Zealand Christmas stamps will be Withdrawn from sale at all post offices on January 5 next year, but, together with the Niue and Tokelau Islands issues will remain on sale at philatelic sales sections until June 30.
