Supreme Court BURGLARY AND THEFT

Accused Found Guilty After a retirement of almost two hours and a half a jury in the Supreme Court yesterday found Makahuri Butler, aged 27, a truck driver, guilty of three charges, and he was remanded in custody by Mr Justice Wilson to August 28 for sentence. Butler was found guilty of burglary of the explosives storage shed of Ashby Bergh and Company, Ltd, at 322 Manchester Street on June 2 and 14, and the theft of 11 tins of mutton birds valued at $lBO, the property of Walter James Te Koeti on June 14. Mr J. E. Butler appeared for the accused, who pleaded not guilty to all charges. Mr N. W. Williamson appeared for the Crown. The trial began on Wednesday before a jury of one woman and 11 men. Remanded lan Jumbo Hicks, aged 22, a bushman, and Eru Hall, aged 20, a millhand, were -remanded in custody to August 28 when they appeared for sentence on a charge of aggravated robbery of $9 and a watch valued at $22 from •Cyril Vincent Walter. The remand was granted because Mr C. A. McVeigh, who appears for Hicks, was ill. Hall is represented by Mr K. N. Hampton.
