Farmers Critical Of Shipping
Shipping, particularly to America, the Pacific Islands and South-East Asia, had become almost a shambles, the chairman of the North Canterbury Federated Farmere’ provincial executive (Mr W. N. Dunlop) told a meeting of the executive yesterday.. The loss of exports and export outlets was serious and Inevitable if delivery dates could not be met, said Mr Dunlop. The situation was particularly serious if New Zealand were to try to take its dependency away from Europe. “I think that we have to recognise as a nation that competition in international trade is keen. The trade already lost is serious, but what is also serious is the lack of confidence in New Zealand to deliver the goods,” said Mr Dunlop. The meeting passed a remit that the fertiliser committee should discuss the unsatisfactorystate of granula-
tion of superphosphate with Kempthorne Prosser and Company, Ltd. Moving the remit Mr D. M. Foster said there had been complaints recently about the poor granulation of superphosphate in bag lots. The fertiliser was very difficult to spread when it was too fine. He said the complaint at the anojnent was not with the fertiliser company. All that was asked was an opportunity to meet members of the company to discuss the matter.
