Police Station Demolition

The successful tenderer for the demolition of part of the rest of the Central Police Station is Mr M. T. Jackson. Mr Jackson in September, 1967, successfully tendered for the demolition of the former Y.M.C.A. building on the corner of Cambridge Terrace and Hereford Street and for the demolition of the stone-faced section which was formerly on the eastern end of the present station.

The new demolition involves a two-storey brick-and-stone building with timber doors, covering a ground area of 1500 sq ft. W. Williamson Construction Company, Ltd, of Christchurch, with a successful tender of s2.lm, is at present working on the Cambridge Terrace-Hereford Street site building the first stage of a police complex which is planned to cover about half the city block bounded by Hereford, Montreal and Cashel streets and Cambridge Terrace.

The New Zealand Army occupies the other half of the land.

This further demolition became necessary after cracks developed in part of the present police station when piles were being driven for foundations for the new building.
