A Highway Danger

Sir,—l wonder if the Roads Board, or any other interested party, .is aware of the danger to children at Duvauchelle. The county decided to place a boardwalk for children to keep them off the road on the way to school, etc. It is beneath overhanging rocks and on several occasions there has been rock-fall and earth falls on to this montrosity. Children have been forbidden by parents to use it, and thereby are still endangered by having to walk along this highway which carries a great volume of traffic.—Yours, etc., HARD-UP RATEPAYER. August 7, 1970.

[The District Commissioner o' Works (Mr E. E. Lawrence) replies: “Although safety footpaths on State highways are subsided by the Roads Board, they are the responsibility of the local authority concerned. The engineer of the Akaroa County has been approached and I am assured that although there have been falls of debris, none has occurred in the last two months and a close watch is being kept on the face.”]
