SCROLL FOR UNIVERSITY

There could be no doubt that in the minds of Englishmen New Zealanders were kith and kin, the Lord Mayor of London (Sir lan Bowater) told members of the council and the professorial board of the University of Canterbury yesterday.

Acting in his capacity as Chancellor of the City University of London, Sir lan Bowater presented the Chancellor of the University of Canterbury (Mr T. H. Me-

Combs) with a leather-bound scroll bearing greetings and good wishes from the City University. In England, people generally thought of New Zealand as being far away. Sir lan Bowater said. They thought in terms of how long it would take to get to New Zealand—although today it took only 30 hours compared with 30 days when he first visited New Zealand 40 years ago.

But they also thought of New Zealand in other terms: as being part of the same “family.” New Zealand troops bad fought at the side of British

troops in two world wars, and this had not been forgotten, Sir lan Bowater said. “English people, and particularly those like myself who have fought alongside the Kiwis, have come to realise that New Zealanders were always considered the best,” he said. Britain and New Zealand faced problems today, such as the possible entry of Britain into the E.E.C. and the question of immigration into Britain. But the two countries could face these problems with a sense that they would solve them and a sense that no difficulty would be allowed to interfere with the

countries' choice of being one and the same family. Mr McCombs welcomed Sir lan Bowater to the university and presented him with two books: J. Oakley’s book of Canterbury paintings, and M. Shadbolt's “New Zealand: Gift of the Sea,” with pictures by Brian Brake. Guests at the function Included the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr A. R. Guthrey) and the Town Clerk (Mr M. B. Hayes).
