BIG SEED ORDER FROM CHILE
More than 500 tons of pasture seed will be loaded for Chile, when the Norwegian vessel Ganja calls at Lyttelton next week.
A tender was called by the Chilean Government two months ago and a quotation for the supply of the bulk of the seed was accepted from Dalgety, New Zealand, Ltd, and Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd. Their tender consisted of 60 tons of Huia white clover, * 150 tons of Manawa (hl) ryegrass, 250 tons of Ruanul perennial ryegrass, 45 tons of Ariki ryegrass, and smaller
parcels of turnip, swede and chou mollier seed.
A quantity of white clover and Ariki ryegrass is also be-
ing shipped by the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Association.
Chile has placed substantial orders with New Zealand seed merchants in the last eight years, and the New Zealand grain and seed manager for Dalgety’s (Mr R. V. McPhail) said yesterday it was pleasing that it had continued to do so, in view of the high prices ruling for small seeds.
Most of the seed is being supplied from Canterbury.
