Tribunal Is Independent
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Aug. 19. The Government said today that it had no power to instruct the Price Tribunal to complete its inquiry into the 1969 increase in beer prices. The Minister of Customs (Mr Adams-Schneider) —acting on behalf of the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Shelton)—said in reply to a Parliamentary question today that the tribunal was an independent, quasi-judicial body and was not subject to Ministerial instruction or direction. “However, the retail price of beer has now been brought back under price control, and in considering an application for increased prices which has just been lodged by the hotel interests, the price tribunal will no doubt have regard to such evidence and submissions presented to it as are relevant to this matter,” the Minister said.
