Guineas Hopes To Race Tomorrow

"The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON. Twenty three-year-olds with aspirations toward this year’s Wanganui Guineas are listed to show their ability on the racetrack tomorrow.

Fourteen of them are in at the Foxton spring meeting and six are to run at Ellerslie. That leaves another 26 nominees which will be resting this week-end, including some of the leading aspirants. Top chances tomorrow include the boom horse, Panzer Chief, unbeaten in three tries at the races. He is the horse bought for more than $20,000 out of Mr P. Moran’s huge jackpot cheque. Panzer Chief is to tackle a strong field in the Sylvia Park Handicap at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting. He will run against another Guineas hope, Moonlighter, over six furlongs in the race which last year went to the champion colt, Piko.

Panzer Chief will surely start a hot favourite, even though he has 9-2. In his last start he carried 8-11 without too siush Uauhle. at ,Mat»-

mata, leading throughout to win a six furlongs sprint Moonlighter did not show up in the Matamata event and he would need to make rapid improvement if his classic plans are to be fulfilled. Trackman is in the race, too, but he looks only a forlorn hope. Others in at Ellerslie are Aureate Star and Wymac, both of which will run in the Karaka Handicap, and the smart filly, Brookby Hill, which is in the open sprint. Open Class Brookby Hill claims most attention, for she won her way into open company at two years. She has already had a race this season, so she should soon be able to show something like her real form. In her latest run at the Whakatane meeting, Brookby Hill settled back early and came home quite well for seventh. . The main local hopes will be having a day off tomorrow. Shaheen, which burst into classic calculations with an

all-the-way win at Tauherenikau last week, will be resting. So will Swat, which ran third in the Carterton race, and Forewarn, which ran well ip.Utf .event

Kaukapakapa has not made a three-year-old appearance yet, so it seems hardly likely that G. Ivil will ask him to run in the classic mile, while Marebello’s plans have been thrown out of calculations by a paddock accident. This means that most interest may centre at Foxton tomorrow on the performances of Silver Knight, Red Sovereign, Red Gurkha, and Rahgam. Sitaer Knight will tackle the Barber Handicap and the others clash in the Perreau Handicap. At Tuesday’s matinee meeting, Silver Knight gave an indifferent performance, though he would hardly have been suited by the soft track. He made a bold showing in his only three-year-old start when he finished fifth at Hastings. The grey’s form tomorrow will probably decide his trainer, E. Temperton, on his classic programme, for. the stable has Purdie (Oncldium —Royal Tourist) in the Guineas, too. There are five Guineas hopes in the last race. The best of them could be Red Gurkha and Red Sovereign, the latter a bold second at Tauherenikau in his only start this season.
