First-Day Form Indicates Win By Barrhill

By

G. K. Yule

Form in the Louisson Handicap last Saturday points to Barrhill (left) making a bold bid to win die National Handicap, the corresponding race on the second night of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s national meeting at Addington Raceway tomorrow.

Barrhill’s Hinds owner-trainer, W. E. Lowe, has been represented in most of the New Zealand Cups in recent years, but at the moment he has no runner eligible for the 1970 contest. Barrhill, which has been driven by H. H. Lowe in most of his latest racing, requires two wins to be eligible for the $2%500 November race. Last Saturday his effort deserved a better fate.

He raced in the "suicide” position on the outside of the trailing horse and ultimate winner, Rhinegolde, for much of the way and it was only in the last few yards that he was run down and beaten by a head. A six-year-old gelding by Light Brigade from Colmar, Barrhill is from the same mare as Mitcham, Max and Corwar. He was a solidlysupported second favourite last Saturday and there will be plenty of money from both on and off-course investors tn say that he will win this week. Unlucky True Avertl and Radiant Globe, both already eligible for the cup, were among the unlucky runners in last week’s Louisson Handicap, both failing to secure a clear run over the final stages of the contest True Averil could manage only a seventh last Saturday, while Radiant Globe was third. They should both have benefited from last week's run and it will be surprising if they fail to show to advantage. Manaroa, a dominating favourite last Saturday when he

wrecked his chance by breaking hopelessly at the start, will again have a host of admirers prepared to take the gamble that he will do everything correctly. If he does move off smoothly, he will probably make a winning run; but he cannot be recommended with any confidence. Rhinegolde, Leading Light, Stylos, Upper Class and Friendly Forbes all raced well enough in the Louisson Handicap to be given a chance of taking a prominent part in the finish to a very open race. Strong Bracket The Templeton trainer, W. R. Butt, who produced Briganelli and Tony Bear to finish second and first respectively in the Christchurch Handicap last week, will have the same two runners in the Winter Handicap. Form in major races for trotters usually works out well over a meeting and Butt’s pair should again be two of the principals to the finish. Tony Bear has been penalised six yards for his win last Saturday when he looked to win with at least that amount in reserve. Waterloo and Royal Armour did not receive good runs last week and they might improve on their efforts and there will be support for Conclusion, Direct Globe, Precocious, and Light View, four horses expected to be big winners during the season.
