A 1963 grey, Water Diviner is by the successful English sire, Premonition (by Precipitation, the sire of Agricola) from Seph, by Abernant, a top English sprinter and sire, and a half-brother to Kurdistan.

Seph won four races and is the dam of several winners besides Water Diviner. She is a daughter of Congo. Among the winning sons and daughters of Congo was Byland, which sired the winners of $120,000 in Australia before being imported to New Zealand in 1959. During eight seasons in New Zealand Byland was the top sire of two-year-olds in 1963-64 and was represented by some top-flight gallopers among them Trial Offer (New Zealand Derby, New Zealand and Great Northern Oaks) and the best three-year-old filly of 1964-65; High Glee joint holder of the Australian six-furlong record), and Bywon (winner of the W.R.C. George Adams (Tattersalls) mile. Congo is also the dam of Rlccal, whose son. Rich Gift, sired last season's top two-year-old, Rich Return. Water Diviner’s third dam, Kong, is also the dam of the champion sire, Grey Sovereign, which is represented in New Zealand

by a young and successful Brandson, Sovereign Edition. Water Diviner will join Shy Boy, Masthead and the veteran champion, Fair's Fair, at Kempton Park.
