STRIKE WARNING
An attack on the state of labour relations in the British motor industry has been made, for the second time in a few months, by the chairman of British Leyland (Lord Stokes). Strikes in the industry have cost British Leyland the production of about 100,000 cars already this
year. The last two months have been the worst yet for disputes. “The success or failure of the British motor industry is in the hands of management and workers on the shop floor,” Lord Stokes said. “If cars are not made, they cannot be sold, and ultimately the financial resources of the industry must be drained. Our overseas competitors have already seen these signs of weakness, and have redoubled their efforts to increase their penetration of our home market. Last month the registration of imported cars in Britain rose to a record level.”
