NEW HEAD IMPRESSED

Civil Defence Training

Gratification at the high standards achieved by local authorities in civil defence matters was expressed by the new Director of Civil Defence (Major General R. B. Dawson) in Christchurch yesterday. General Dawson, who took over his new post only 10 days ago, has been attending the three-day training course for senior wardens at Lincoln College attended by abput 60. The course ended yesterday. Until his appointment General Dawson said that his only close liason with the civil defence organisation was when he commanded the northern Military District “I think we have a very good Civil Defence Act and my first impressions are that the organisation from top to bottom has well-defined responsibilities,” he said. General Dawson will look into running at least one national civil defence exercise. The 60 wardens had lectures, playlets, films, and discussions relating to the effects of a simulated earthquake at "Troutbridge” (Ashburton).
