B TEAM LOSES
Outplayed By Hurunui
Hurunui beat Canterbury B, 13-6, in a Rugby match played in ideal conditions at Waikari yesterday. Hurunui deserved its win as it was much quicker to the loose ball and its backs tackled welL
Canterbury had a monopoly of the set scrums, but its backs lacked penetration and dropped many passes. The Canterbury forwards were too loose and too slow and Hurunui was able to drive forward on many occasions. Hurunui opened the scoring when the second fiveeighths, D. Palmer, intercepted a pass and ran 40 yards to score between the posts. B. Drake converted. A penalty kick by W. Lewis for Canterbury hit the bar and bounced over to make the half-time score 5-3. After 10 minutes in the second spell, B. Ford picked up a dropped pass and ran 30 yards to score for Hurunui; Drak£ converted.
A further penalty goal by Lewis made the score 10-6. Hurunui was dominating play at this stage and from a scrum near the Canterbury line, the flanker, G. Hewitt, scored a try.
D. Wynne won a lot of ball int he line-outs and, with J. Sheehan and N. G. Cornelius, was the best of a disappointing pack for Canterbury. The half-back, M. Brown, did not have a good day and this affected the backs’ play. In contrast, the Hurunui players had their best game of the season, and the margin did not flatter them.
Referee: Mr H. Gray.
