Opening Exhibition At Graphic Gallery
The opening of Barry Cleavin’s and Anne Hercus’s Graphic Gallery in England Street is a timely event that will add even greater diversity to the Christchurch art scene. Graphic Gallery is probably unique in New Zealand in that its principal function will be to deal in original prints and drawings. The gallery layout has been designed specifically for this purpose. Graphic will also provide a new relationship in dealerartist transactions in that the gallery will purchase a limited number of works directly from the artist, for resale to the public. . Print-making as an art form in New Zealand has moved from a place of relative obscurity 10 years ago to demand respect today, not only in this country, but also at an international level. In all, 16 well known printmakers and painters have been invited to exhibit 85
prints and drawings for this opening exhibition. The various printing styles of Stanley Palmer (bamboo engravings), Helen Reid (lithographs), Marilyn Webb (linocuts), Mervyn Williams (woodcut, serigraphs), Barry Cleavin (etchings, lithographs), John Drawbridge (aquatint mezzotint, and drypoint), Patrick Hanly (serigraph), Kees Hos (relief prints), John Lethbridge (serigraphs) and Vivian Lynn (surface prints) will be known to viewers who have visited past exhibitions of the Print Council.
Rosemary Campbell, Phillip Trusttuiri, Garry Tricker and Ralph Hotere exhibit drawings and sketches in a wide variety of media. Graphic Gallery has begun its existence on a commendably high note. The exhibition can be viewed by appointment. —G.T.M.
