Holin Line Freight Rates Increased
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, July 28.
The Holm Shipping Company, Ltd, today announced “with much regret” an increase in coastal services freight rates from August 10.
This follows an announcement last week that the company, with two others, would have to increase the rates. “But at the time we had no idea that the rise would need to be applied so soon, or to such an extent,” said the general manager (Mr I. A. McKay). The increase was a necessity and was an average of about $4.50 a ton. “To us, as our figures will prove, it is simply a case of survival, and if the higher rates do not achieve the expected increase in income it will be quite impossible for us to continue operating the coastal services,” he said. The increase would not apply to the Holmlea, which is under time charter to the
Union Steam Ship Company on the Wellington-Lyttelton service. The general manager of the Northern Steam Ship Company, Ltd (Mr I. C. Skudder) said his company would probably be announcing freight Increases in the near future. There had been a lot of cost increases in the last year. The freight department manager of the Subritzky Shipping Company, Ltd (Mr A. J. Moore), said that an increase was inevitable. The company services the outlying islands of the Hauraki Gulf. The Auckland manager of the Union Steam Ship Company, Ltd (Mr R. C. Stevens), said that to the best of his knowledge no increases were planned.
