TURNER’S AVERAGE FOURTH HIGHEST

Turner, on Monday hit his fifth century of the season for Worcestershire, scoring 106 against Warwickshire at Birmingham, in the county cricket competition. son at an average of 51.4, which will raise him to fourth place in the batting averages behind the West Indians, G. Sobers, C. Lloyd and R. Kanhai. The opening batsman, G. Boycott, warmed up. for England’s fourth cricket test against the Rest of the World XI on Thursday, with a career-best 260 not out as Yorkshire declared at 450 for four in its match against Essex, P,A.-Reuter reports. It was the highest individual score made in England since 1965 when J. Edrich, the man Boycott has replaced in the test team, hit 310 not out against New Zealand. Boycott, resuming at his Saturday score of 230, batted seven hours, hitting 27 fours. For Worcestershire the West Ihdian, R. Headley (108) and Turner, replying to Warwickshire’s 150, combined in a firstwicket stand of 185. Headley’s century took 172 minutes and included 17 fours: Turner took an hour longer to reach three figures; hitting seven fours. Close of play scores were:— At Colchester: Yorkshire 450/4 declared (G. Boycott 260 n. 0., J. Hampshire 80), Essex 226 (78.4 overs, B. Meades 78, B. Ward 44; R. Hutton 4/60) and 0/4. Brown 79 n. 0.), Surrey 230 (M. Stewart 79, J.' Edrich 50). At Hove: Kent 308/7 declared Sussex 154 (63.3 overs, J. Shepherd 5/45 and 4/84). At Leicester: Leicestershire 198 (84.1 overs), Hampshire 237/4 (68 overs, B. Richards 150) At Birmingham: Warwickshire 150 (73.4 overs) and 0/9, Worcestershire 368 (R. Headley 108, G. Turner 106, T.
