Dowling Hopeful About Batting
New Zealand’s cricket captain, G. T. Dowling, has had his first batting practice since the loss of the middle finger of his left hand, and has expressed cautious optimism about his return to the game.
Dowling was at the indoor 1 school in the Hagley Sports < Centre last week, in the com-1 pany of two other 1969 tour- i ists, R. C. Motz and K. J. i Wadsworth. He. batted for about 20 minutes and said he felt no after-effects in his left hand. “I am quite satisfied with progress to this early stage,” he said. Dowling will have an occasional net at the indoor school in the next two months, but will concentrate chiefly on general fitness, based on a running and gymnastics programme. He will also work on strengthening his left hand, and with this in mind is using an exercising, springlike device which he can carry in a pocket. Dowling, who led New Zea-
land on its successful tour of England, India and Pakistan last year, was injured during the short Australia tour in January.
