‘Disturbing’ Figures

(N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, July 29. A “marked increase” in the number of foreign bodies left in patients after hospital operations in 1967 is described as disturbing in an article in the latest “Medical Journal.” The July issue of the journal refers to the consolidated statistics for the performance of. public hospitals in 1967, which were published earlier this year. In a new table in the statistics, 20 patients are shown to have had foreign bodies left in operation, wonnds in 1967, compared with two such incidents in 1966.

The table of therapeutic misadventures in surgical treatment also shows a double increase in nerve Injuries due to surgery—from seven in 1966 to 21 in 1967. “No doubt the various medical protection organisations know what this cost the insurers, but this cannot be viewed with complacency,” the article comments.
