(N.Z.P.A. Staff Correspondent) SYDNEY, July 28. Tasmania plans to introduce the teaching of French in primary schools in a scheme which may be widened later to embrace Asian languages. The programme will concentrate on teaching children to speak fluently in two years, and then begin written French in the third year Dr Vera O’Byrne, senior lecturer in French at the Hobart Teachers’ College, says: "The advantages of primary school children learning a foreign language are that they are less self-conscious than older children, their ears are much sharper, and they pick up the correct pronunciation very quickly.”
