Guide Service For Provincial Buildings
The Canterbury Provincial Buildings Board has won the support of key organisations in a plan to make the Provincial Buildings relevant to the people of Christchurch and to visitors.
Yesterday the board met representatives of the Canterbury Progress League, the Historic Places Trust, the Christchurch Civic Trust, the South Island Publicity Association, the Canterbury Branch of the New Zealand Institute of Architects and the Canterbury Pilgrims’ and Early Settlers’ Association. They agreed that the Provincial Buildings should be open to the public and that a guide service should be set up to explain to visitors the history, architecture and importance of the buildings. A controlling committee is to be set up to organise the guide service and ensure that the work does not become the responsibility of only a few. The committee will seek cooperation from all sections of the community including young people who could be trained to undertake the guide work. The meeting con-
sidered that the guide service could perhaps start next summer. The meeting also agreed that the buildings could be the subject of a special brochure containing a history of their origin and significance. Coloured slides may also be made available for sale and the buildings made a stopping place for tourist buses. Representatives have been asked to report on the meeting to their organisations and return for another meeting in about a month to form the guide service.
