RACING Nine In Steeples Field But Only Two Dividends

A field of nine for the Grand National Steeplechase next Saturday offers an interesting balance of North Island and South Island horses.

Mr W. E. Hazlett has put three horses, Koral, Mosque and Ettrick, into the Grand National field, but Ettrick may be on a “standby” basis; he is also in the Enfield Steeplechase, to be run earlier in the day. Koral, Mosque, and Game Call did much to advance their claims in the Christchurch Hunt’s Homeby ■ Steeples. The North Island bid will ; be strengthened by Spray : Doone, winner of the difficult ' Great Northern-McGregor ■ Grant steeples double at ’ Ellerslie in June, and of the Winter Hurdles at Trentham 1 earlier this month. ; Teak is being brought back to Riccarton in a bid to win: his second Grand National on , merit, not by “default” He - finished a distant second in < 1968 but secured first place [ when R. B. Weaver weighed ; in Ijlb light on Mosque. i Victory Prince, one of two 1 North Island horses on the I minimum, may be able to i place further value on Hast- 1 ings winter form. He has earned a start in the ' Grand National after a second I to Robert Earl in the Hawke's Bay Steeplecase—Mosque was, fifth and Ettrick seventh—oni June 20 and a third in Robert Earl’s Hastings Steeplechase 1 a week later. s The T.A.B. concesion double J will be on the Jumpers’ Flat i and the Winter Cup.
